Vintage 1950 Martin D-28 with Bigsby Neck Natural Owned by Ry Cooder
Legendary musician, songwriter, composer and producer Ry Cooder is known across the guitar world as not only being one of the great guitarists of all time, but also a prolific collector of instruments. Whether it be vintage Gibson acoustics, funky Teisco electrics from the 1960's, or modern customs by Danny Ferrington, these instruments have a pedigree like few others. Never one to be afraid to tinker, Ry's instruments often have modifications and customized work done to them. Some of his guitars have even become categories themselves - just look up "Coodercaster".
Over the years, Ry has amassed a massive collection. After he recently relocated to a new home, he knew it was time to part with some of it. Not only to make space, but also to allow others to enjoy the instruments and make new music with them. Beckerco Music is proud to partner with him on this special project. Together, we present the Ry Cooder Collection.
All of the instruments have been vetted and worked on by Paul Flynn, co-owner of Truetone, head luthier and Ry's personal guitar tech. Each comes with an official Certificate of Authenticity signed by Paul and Ry. We have done our best to research and determine models, years and other information about each instrument - keep in mind that each is a unique piece and may have been modified over the years, and is sold as is. This is an opportunity to own a piece of music history, and to add a special instrument to your own collection.
Of all of the instruments, this may be the most unique: a vintage 1950 Martin D-28 with a Bigsby neck on it. Yes, that's correct - it's a classic Martin D-28 body modified with Bigsby neck on it. We've had a lot of interesting guitars here over the years, and this one ranks right up near the top of the list.
While we have no provenance on whether or not Paul Bigsby made it, our vintage expert and main luthier's view is that the neck was built, shaped and finished to a high standard, and believes it could be. There's a long history of Bigsby doing so, for artists such as Zeke Clements and Merle Travis (check out his signature model that Martin made more recently).
The guitar has a 2 piece birdseye maple neck with ebony fretboard and walnut stringer, with the original tuners in place. It's smooth and extremely comfortable to play. The Brazilian rosewood back & sides with wide-grained spruce top that has been refinished, but very well done. Interestingly, it has an enlarged soundhole (like Clarence White's D-28), and therefore projects extremely well. The ebony bridge was replaced, but all all other parts are original. The original case was replaced years ago.
A guitar like this is beyond special - and that's before considering that it was owned by Ry Cooder. It comes with a signed Certificate of Authencity. This could be the centerpiece of any collection, especially one that puts a premium on the unique and unmatchable.
