We have the perfect vintage acoustic guitar for you to compose your songs, this 1965 Epiphone FT-98 Troubadour! You don't see these very often, especially as nice as nice one - and it sounds amazing.
This is a '60s Epiphone made by Gibson that features a wide neck with a 12-fret neck joint. This guitar was built to be a hybrid of a nylon and steel string guitar. It's a square shouldered guitar with a maple body with a spruce top. This combination of tonewoods gives you a brighter, snappier tone than rosewood or mahogany back and sides. The bracing of this instrument is lighter than other steel string Epiphones to give you even more resonance. and larger sound. The neck shape is quite a bit thick especially with a 2" nut width. The advantage here is you get excellent spacing between strings, perfect for fingerpicking.
Trying to capitalize on the Folk Boom, Gibson introduced several models designated as Folk guitars. Their wide necks and 12 fret neck joints as well as dual white pickguards set them apart. This one in particular only has one pickguard.
The idea was a cross between steel string and classical. The Epiphone version is based on the square shouldered maple body with spruce top, rosewood fingerboard and bridge. The bracing is quite a bit lighter than an equivalent steel string guitar of the era. It is a 12 fret neck joint however the bracing is located as if it were a 14 fret guitar. In addition the bridge plate is located as if it were a 12 fret guitar. The result of the lighter bracing and bridge position makes for a guitar that catches you off guard. It sounds huge! It is lively and full and does what you wish a Gibson Dove would do , or J-200 for that matter. The 2" nut width takes a minute to acclimatize to. The neck shape is nice oval and comfortable despite the width.
This guitar is a real find from the 60s Folk Boom, and it is in great condition, especially considering its age, and comes with a soft shell case. It's been setup to play perfectly by the techs in our shop (especially important on a guitar like this). For those that are into guitars like this, it's a serious score!
