We are excited to present a special guitar, one that is rarely seen and hard to find: a vintage 1977 Ibanez 2640. This one just came in, and it has an interesting backstory....
Only manufactured from 1975 to 1977, the 2460 Natural was Ibanez’s version of the Gibson L5 jazz box. It was sometimes referred to as the “Lawsuit L5”. Here's why:
In June 1977, in the Philadelphia Federal District Court, a lawsuit was filed by the Norlin Corporation (the parent company of Gibson Guitars), against Ibanez’s parent company Elger/Hoshino U.S.A. It was over the use of the Gibson headstock design and logo. Hoshino settled out of court and the case was officially closed on February 2, 1978.
The 2460 is considered by collectors and players alike to be one of the best Japanese “copies” to come out of the 1970’s. The 2460 features a laminated arched spruce top with curly maple back & sides, ebony fingerboard (with mother of pearl inlays), a hard laminated maple neck, and a gold plated tailpiece.
Of course there is some wear (it is over 45 years old now), and the binding has some chips that needed some repair work, which we've done. Everything on the guitar is original except the tuners, nut and top pot, which have been replaced. The case may be old and from this era but is not being presented as the original case (we're just not sure). The guitar has been setup to play perfectly by the techs in our shop, and of course, it sounds amazing!
For those that know, a vintage Ibanez 2640 like this is a special guitar. We haven't had one before and don't expect to again, at least not anytime soon. So if this is up your alley, grab it before it's gone!
